Construction

Nukumi was designed as a self-unloading bulk carrier for Canada Steamship Lines and K+S Windsor Salt to serve the Magdalene Islands Salt Mine and Eastern Canada. She is designed with several state of the art features, including diesel-electric propulsion, a specialized hull design. The most innovative features are components of her loading and unloading systems. Nukumi is equipped with a single-point loading system, which allows the vessel to take on cargo through a single hopper midship. A traversing conveyor belt on rails at the top of the cargo hold shifts to evenly load the holds of the vessel. Her unloading boom is also equipped with a traversing belt to allow for different discharge locations without having to shift the vessel or the boom at the dock.

Her self-unloading equipment consists of a double hold belt leading to an aft loop-belt system to a deck-mounted boom. She is equipped with a single-point loading system as well.

Her Story

Nukumi was designed as a self-unloading bulk carrier for Canada Steamship Lines and K+S Windsor Salt to serve the Magdalen Islands Mines Seleine salt mine and Eastern Canada.

The birth of the idea for Nukumi was on September 18, 2019, when Canada Steamship Lines and K+S Windsor Salt signed an agreement for a long-term charter and construction of a new ship to service the Mines Seleine salt mine in the Magdalene Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Soon after a contract was signed with the Chengxi Shipyard of Jiangyin City, China, for construction of the vessel. Several hull blocks were constructed prior to the keel-laying in 2020. The ship was constructed using a total of 219 blocks, being assembled on the launchways at the Chengxi shipyard. Nukumi was launched on May 20, 2021. Fit out and final construction phases were taken care of over the months following, and she was officially delivered to Canada Steamship Lines on January 19, 2022, beginning her maiden voyage to Canada on January 31. After a two month journey and undergoing final preparations, Nukumi loaded her first cargo on May 5, 2022.
